Interview Performance is Everything
___________________________________
Regardless of the time you invest in your job hunt, interviewers
will base their hiring decision on your INTERVIEW PERFORMANCE. If
you succeed with this performance, your reward will be a new job
that can improve the quality of your life. If you don't succeed,
you've just wiped out months of hard work and perhaps experienced
an indefinite setback. Serious job hunters appreciate the
significance of the interviewing process. THE INTERVIEW IS
CLEARLY THE MOST DECISIVE PART OF YOUR JOB HUNTING CAMPAIGN.
You're Hired! 2
_________________________________________________________________
The Interview Process
_____________________
To help you understand the interview process, let's first clear
up a common misconception: Outstanding qualifications rarely
guarantee employment. In reality, job qualifications land inter-
views, but INTERVIEWING SKILLS LAND JOBS. The employer will hire
the candidate who is PERCEIVED as the best person for the job.
More often than not, the person chosen is NOT the "most
qualified" candidate. The reason is simple: Busy employers use a
pre-screening process to select only those applicants who meet
specific hiring requirements. As a result, everyone who enters
the interview is "qualified," and thereby, has a reasonable
chance of success.
Remember that the interviewer doesn't know you, doesn't know your
potential capabilities, and can't read your mind. The interviewer
is forced to base the hiring decision on your interview
performance. If you stumble over answers or answer questions
inappropriately, your fate is sealed.
Now, if you have an impressive background, but your interviewing
skills are weak, you may not get the job you deserve. A mediocre
candidate who has strong interviewing skills can take a great job
away from you. If, on the other hand, your competitors have more
education or experience than you, think positive. With
preparation, you can improve your interviewing skills and give
yourself a distinct advantage. In either case, interview training
will significantly increase your chances of getting hired.
Preparing for the Interview
___________________________
So how can you effectively prepare for an interview? After all,
you don't know what to expect. The answer is easier than you
might think.
Contrary to popular belief, job interviews are, in fact, very
predictable. The interviewer simply wants to learn more about
you; and who knows more about you, than you? So, many of the
questions you will face are non-threatening and easy to answer.
There are, of course, challenging questions that can wreak havoc
with the unprepared candidate. Fortunately, only a small number
of tough questions exist. Because the possibilities are limited,
the questions are actually predictable. Sure, there are minor
variations, but if you prepare responses to the general
questions, you'll have no problem managing the variations. By
preparing and practicing in advance, you can deliver polished
You're Hired! 3

answers to difficult questions. In doing so, you will impress the
interviewer(s) with your confidence and professionalism. Consider
the advantage you will have over other interview candidates.
Rehearse the Script to Get the Role
___________________________________
You can think of the job interview as an acting performance. You
are the actor or actress, and the questions and answers are the
script. With the help of a comprehensive interview training
system, you can now rehearse the script in advance. Getting hired
depends almost entirely on how well you perform. If you know your
lines, perfect your delivery, and dress the part, you'll get the
job.
This manual presents a proven interview training system unlike
any other approach. This system provides realistic interviewing
experience to prepare you for the most difficult of interviews.
With it, you will increase your confidence, reduce interview
stress, and quickly land the job and salary you deserve. Without
it, you will leave the outcome of your job hunt to chance. By
preparing to interview, you prepare for success.
* YOUR SECRET WEAPON *
Practice Makes Perfect
______________________
In today's competitive job market, interview success requires
careful preparation. You are certain to face rivalry from other
determined candidates. Many of your opponents will have studied
interview strategies found in books. They represent a serious
threat to your success.
While reading can provide valuable knowledge, it cannot develop
the real-life skill of successful interviewing. After all, did
you learn to drive a car by reading a book? Of course not, you
learned by practicing. Successful interviewing, like driving,
requires practice. The more you practice, the better you get.
Practice Made Easy
__________________
"You're Hired!" is a computer-based job interview simulator that
gives you the practical training needed to beat the competition.
You're Hired! 4
_________________________________________________________________
It is your "Secret Weapon," a weapon that cannot be found in any
book. With "You're Hired!," you'll learn to answer difficult
questions AND you'll get the practice you need to perfect your
responses. This balanced combination of knowledge and experience
is the ultimate success formula.
The simulator in "You're Hired!" will quickly show just how
awkward and stressful an interview can become. When faced with a
difficult question, you have just seconds to prepare and begin
delivering an acceptable response. Any difficulties that you
encounter will instantly elevate your stress levels. As stress
increases, performance decreases, which causes more stress. This
perilous cycle is the sole cause of many rejection letters. One
poorly answered question can leave a lasting impression.
Reducing Interview Stress
_________________________
To combat interview stress, you must prepare in advance. If you
anticipate the difficult questions, there will be no surprises.
If you prepare solid answers to these questions, you will always
respond appropriately. And finally, if you practice your answers
in a realistic simulated interview, you will project a confident
and professional image.
To further improve your effectiveness, job hunting experts
recommend that you record your voice while practicing your
answers. Recording and listening to your voice is an excellent
training technique, although it can be awkward and inconvenient.
As a result, few people take advantage of this strategy.
Again, "You're Hired!" gives you a competitive edge. Simply use
the power of your personal computer to enhance the verbal
feedback capabilities of the recorder. "You're Hired!" will
conveniently display questions one at a time, automatically reset
and display elapsed time, offer advice when asked, and allow you
to attach reminder notes to each question. Evaluating your voice
in a simulated interview has never been easier or more effective.
This efficient system eliminates distractions so you can focus on
improving your delivery.
Benefits to You

interview candidates. With it, you will prepare effective answers

realistic interview experience obtained by using this powerful
simulator will help you to:
* Deliver effective responses for maximum effect
* Feel, look, and act confident
* Eliminate nervous behaviors and embarrassing mistakes
* Put an end to your job hunt
* Land the job and salary you deserve
* HOW TO SUCCEED *
The Best Approach
_________________
The key to effective interview training is realism. The closer
your training resembles real-life interviewing, the better your
chances of success. Creating this realistic simulation is easy
with "You're Hired!." Simply picture yourself sitting in an
actual interview, face to face with an interviewer. As your
screen displays each question, begin speaking within a couple
seconds. Once you've completed your answer, tap a key and the
computer will ask the next question.
You may be tempted to browse through the questions in "You're
Hired!" and mentally prepare your answers. This approach
certainly requires less effort, but it is also much less
effective. Speak aloud, as though you are talking to a
prospective employer. Using your voice is much more difficult
than simply imagining what to say. By practicing with your voice,
you will learn to deliver more concise and effective responses.
To impress interviewers, you must focus on more than the content
of your answers. You also must evaluate how you sound and how you
look. "You're Hired!" will help you to individually isolate and
assess each of these areas.
The following three-step training system outlines the ideal ap-
proach:
STEP TACTIC EQUIPMENT USED
____ _____________________________ __________________________
1) Prepare answers and practice Computer
2) Practice with verbal feedback Computer, tape recorder
3) Practice with visual feedback Printed questions, mirror
(Optional: video camera)
You're Hired! 6
_________________________________________________________________
For best results, continue practicing at each level until you are
comfortable with your performance. You must, for example, become
proficient at step one before advancing to step two. Rushing this
process will decrease the effectiveness of your training.
The Job is Yours
________________
Why learn from actual interview mistakes and lost opportunities?
Instead, learn from a realistic job interview simulator, in the
comfort and privacy of your home.
If you follow the training system as outlined above, you'll be
"light-years" ahead of other candidates. With the help of "You're
Hired!," you will impress interviewers with the content of your
answers, the confidence in your voice, and the natural appearance
of your gestures and mannerisms. As a result, they will perceive
you as the "best" person for the job. As you know, the best
person always gets hired.
With "You're Hired!," you can cut months or even years off your
job hunt. Without it, you're wasting precious time. "You're
Hired!" will help you to enjoy life now, with a better job, more
money, and time to do the activities you really enjoy. Improving
the quality of your life is not a difficult task. Simply use
"You're Hired!" to get hired.

general, remember that pressing <ENTER> moves you forward, while
pressing <ESC> moves you backward.
If you are ever in doubt about what to do, first search your
screen for a description of the active keys and their functions,
e.g. "F1=Help." In this case, press the <F1> key to view a help
screen. The active keys are usually listed at the very bottom of
the screen. If you've searched the program and this manual and
still can't find an answer to your question, please refer back to
the section titled, "Answers to Your Questions."
If you leave your computer unattended with "You're Hired!"
loaded, you may return to find that your screen is blank. Don't
worry. A built-in screen saver automatically blanks the screen
after ten minutes of keyboard inactivity. This energy-saving
feature helps to extend the life of your monitor. If your screen
does go blank, simply tap any key and the display will return.
The "Main Menu" in "You're Hired!" offers the following options:
QUICK START - Describes the basic steps required to begin a
realistic simulated job interview.
BEGIN INTERVIEW - Starts the main job interview simulator which
conveniently displays questions one at a
time, automatically resets and displays
elapsed time, offers advice when asked, and
allows you to attach reminder notes to each
question.
TAG QUESTIONS - Selects or "tags" questions for use in a
customized interview called a "Special
Drill." You also may view, add, or change the
questions, the advice text, and your reminder
notes.
SPECIAL DRILL - Creates a customized interview using the
questions you selected with the "Tag
Questions" option. The "Special Drill"
simulator is similar to the "Begin Interview"
simulator, but displays only "tagged" ques-
tions.
PRINT QUESTIONS - Prints a report containing all of the
interview questions and advice text. This
report is particularly useful when practicing
in front of a mirror or video camera.
There are two ways to execute a "Main Menu" option. You may
either use the arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press
You're Hired! 12
_________________________________________________________________
<ENTER>, or press the first letter of your choice to quickly
select and execute that option, e.g. press the <P> key to "Print
Questions." The second method is a time-saving feature which also
works with the Action Menu in the interview simulation screens.
The "Quick Start" option is self-explanatory. The other options
are described below:
* BEGIN AN INTERVIEW *
This is the main interview simulator in "You're Hired!." It
conveniently displays questions one at a time, automatically
resets and displays elapsed time, offers advice when asked, and
allows you to attach reminder notes to each question. A large
window containing a single question covers most of the screen.
The bottom border of this window has three fields containing the
following information:
TOPIC - Displays the current question's topic.
Related questions have been grouped into
topics.
QUESTION NUMBER - Displays the total number of questions and
the position of the current question rela-
tive to the other questions, e.g. "Ques-
tion 5 of 25."
TAG STATUS - Indicates whether or not the current
question is "tagged" for use in a custom-
ized interview. For more information,
refer to the section titled, "Special
Drills."
You will find an Action Menu on the bottom of your screen. Each
Menu choice is described below:
NEXT - View the next question.
PREVIOUS - View the previous question.
SELECT - Select a specific question for viewing. Type
the question ID number and press <ENTER> to
display that question.
RESET - Reset the "Elapsed Time" counter to zero.
You're Hired! 13
_________________________________________________________________
ADVICE - Display suggestions for answering the current
question or an example of a good answer to the
question. An on-screen notepad also appears so
you can attach reminder notes to each question
(see below for more details).
TAG/UNTAG - Mark questions with a "tag" for later use in a
customized interview. This option acts as a
toggle switch to change the "tag" status of the
questions. For more information on customized
interviews, refer to section titled, "Special
Drills."
CHANGE - Edit the displayed question, advice, or notes.
EXIT - Return to the "Main Menu."
The "Advice" option on the Action Menu warrants further
discussion. When you select "Advice," two new boxes appear in the
center of your screen. The "Advice" box is "display only," which
means you cannot edit its contents from this screen. The "Notes"
box is a notepad for your reminder notes. This box is "active"
and will accept keyboard input. For more information on writing
notes, refer to the section in this manual titled, "Using the
Notepad."
Regular practice with this interview simulator will greatly
improve your interview performance. If you want to master the art
of interviewing, refer back to the section in this manual titled,
"How to Succeed." It describes how you can integrate "You're
Hired!" into a proven three-step training system. This system
will boost your confidence and give you every possible advantage
in the employment interview.
* TAG QUESTIONS *
If you select "Tag Questions" from the "Main Menu," the "Tag
Table" will appear. This table has several important functions.
Its most obvious function is to conveniently display all of the
questions, advice text, and reminder notes. The primary purpose
of the "Tag Table" is to provide a way to select, or "tag,"
individual questions for use in a customized interview called a
"Special Drill." You can also add or change the questions,
advice, and notes from this screen.
You're Hired! 14
_________________________________________________________________
Tag Table Basics
________________
Press the down arrow key several times to move, or "scroll," the
highlight bar. You will notice that the contents of the "Advice"
and "Notes" boxes change each time the highlight bar moves. These
boxes automatically display the advice text and any reminder
notes that you have attached to the current question. Scrolling
through the questions in the "Tag Table" is an easy way to review
the advice text and your reminder notes.
The following keys may be used to move the highlight bar:
UP ARROW - Move up one question at a time.
DOWN ARROW - Move down one question at a time.
PGUP - Move up one screen of questions at a time.
PGDN - Move down one screen of questions at a time.
The upper left corner of the "Tag Table" screen contains a
"Locator" field. The locator allows you to quickly jump to any
question. To use it, simply type the ID number of a question. If,
for example, you want to see question number 21, press 2, then
press 1. If you pause briefly before typing the 1, you will
notice that the highlight bar first jumps to question 2, then to
question 21.
Tagging Questions
_________________
Creating a customized interview is as easy as selecting, or
"tagging," a few questions to display in a "Special Drill." The
following keys may be used to tag and untag questions:
GREY PLUS + Tag the highlighted question
GREY MINUS - Untag the highlighted question
GREY ASTERISK * Flip from tagged to untagged or visa versa
ALT-T Tag all of the questions (global tag)
(i.e. Hold down the <ALT> key, then press <T>)
ALT-U Untag all of the questions (global untag)
ALT-F Flip all of the questions from tagged to
untagged or visa versa (global flip)
A tag column is located to the left of the question ID column.
When you tag a question, a check mark will appear in the tag
column.
To create a customized interview, tag one or more questions,
press <ESC> to return to the "Main Menu," then select "Special

questions.
Adding and Editing Questions
____________________________
To add a question to the "You're Hired!" data file, press
<INSERT>. A blank entry form will appear on your screen. To
change an existing question from the "Tag Table," first position
the highlight bar over the question, then press <ENTER>. An edit
form containing this question will appear.
To complete the entry or edit forms, first use your left and
right arrow keys to select a topic, then press <ENTER>. The next
field, "Question," is a required text field. This means that you
cannot move down the form while this field is blank. The
remaining fields are not required fields and can be left blank.
To save an added or changed record, press the <ENTER> key until
the form disappears, or press the <F2> key. "You're Hired! will
automatically save your text and return you to the "Tag Table."
To exit the form WITHOUT saving your text, press the <ESC> key
until the form disappears, or press the <F7> key.
Please note that the "Advice" area actually consists of three
separate fields, one field for each line. "Notes," on the other
hand, is one large field and functions like a small text editor
or word processor.
The following keys are active when adding or editing records:
ARROW KEYS - Move up, down, left, or right.
ENTER - Move down one field at a time. To save your
changes and return to the "Tag Table,"

Deleting Questions
__________________
Don't worry about accidentally erasing individual records
(questions). You can't, because "You're Hired!" does not have a
"delete" key. The only way to erase a record is to type new text
over an existing record while in "edit" mode. In other words, to
delete a question, you must replace it with another question. For
more information on using the "edit" mode, see "Adding and
Editing Questions" earlier in this section.
* SPECIAL DRILLS *
As you practice interviewing with "You're Hired!," you will find
that some questions require more work than others. To focus on
your areas of weakness, you can select or "Tag" specific
questions for use in a "Special Drill." The "Special Drill" is a
customized interview simulator that only displays tagged
questions.
To create a "Special Drill," exit to the "Main Menu" and select
"Tag Questions." A table containing all of the questions will
appear on your screen. To tag a question, first use your arrow
keys to highlight a question, then press the Grey <+> key. A
check mark will appear in the column to the left of the question
ID number to indicate that this question is tagged. Tag any
additional questions that you want to use, then press <ESC> to
return to the "Main Menu." Select "Special Drill" to simulate an
interview using only tagged questions. For more information on
tagging questions, refer to the section titled, "Tag Questions."
When you select "Special Drill," an interview simulator is
displayed. A large window containing a single question covers
most of the screen. The bottom border of this window has three
fields containing the following information:
TOPIC - Displays the current question's topic.
Related questions have been grouped into
topics.
DRILL NUMBER - Displays the total number of tagged
questions and the position of the
You're Hired! 17
_________________________________________________________________
current question relative to the other
questions, e.g. "Question 3 of 11."
QUESTION NUMBER - Shows the permanent ID number of the
displayed question.
The bottom of your screen contains an Action Menu. Each Menu
choice is described below:
NEXT - View the next tagged question.
PREVIOUS - View the previous tagged question.
FIRST - Jump to the first tagged question.
RESET - Reset the "Elapsed Time" counter to zero.
ADVICE - View suggestions for answering the current
question or an example of a good answer. An on-
screen notepad allows you to attach reminder
notes to each question.
UNTAG - Remove the displayed question from the drill.
CHANGE - Edit the displayed question, advice, or notes.
EXIT - Return to the "Main Menu."
The "Advice" option on the Action Menu warrants further
discussion. When you select "Advice," two new boxes appear in the
center of your screen. The "Advice" box is "display only" which
means you cannot edit its contents from this screen. The "Notes"
box is a notepad for your reminder notes. This box is "active"
and will accept keyboard input. For more information on writing
notes, refer to the section in this manual titled, "Using the
Notepad."
Casually practicing with this interview simulator will greatly
improve your interview performance. If you want to perfect the
art of interviewing, refer to the section in this manual titled,
"How to Succeed." It describes how you can integrate "You're
Hired!" into a proven three step training system. This system
will boost your confidence and give you every possible advantage
in the employment interview.

* PRINTING QUESTIONS *
To print a report containing all of the interview questions and
advice text, first make sure that your printer is ready to print,
then select "Print Questions" from the "Main Menu."
A printed copy of the questions and advice text is particularly
useful when you are practicing in front of a mirror or video
camera. For more information on this technique, refer back to the
section titled, "How to Succeed."
* USING THE NOTEPAD *
The notepad is limited to three lines of text. It uses "word-
wrap," which means you do not need to press <ENTER> at the end of
each line. As you type, the text will automatically continue
(wrap) onto the next line. Any notes that you type and save will
remain attached to the current question.
The following keys are active when adding or editing notes:
INSERT - Acts as a toggle between the "Push" and "Over-
write" modes. "Push" INSERTS text at the cursor
and pushes existing text to the right. "Over-
write" allows you to TYPE OVER existing text.
CTRL-END - Delete all characters from the cursor to the
end of the current line.
CTRL-HOME - Delete all characters on the current line.
ESC - With the cursor positioned on the first line of
the notepad, press <ESC> once to erase your
changes and again to return to the previous
screen.
F2 - Save your changes and return to the previous
screen.
ENTER - Moves the cursor down one line. If the cursor
is positioned on the last line, pressing
<ENTER> will save your changes and return you
to the simulator screen.

* THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT *
"You're Hired!" is a copyrighted computer program that is being
marketed as Shareware. Shareware is a distribution method, NOT a
type of software. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers,
just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable
quality. (In both cases, there are good and bad programs!) The
only difference between commercial software and Shareware is in
the method of distribution.
Shareware distribution is an inexpensive option for software
authors because it does not require expensive marketing or
elaborate packaging. Shareware authors pass this cost savings on
to you, the consumer. Their programs are typically much less
expensive than equivalent commercial programs.
Because shareware authors market their software on a "try before
you buy" basis, you know exactly what you're buying and how well
You're Hired! 20
_________________________________________________________________
it fits your needs. If you don't like it, you're under no
obligation to buy it. Commercial software, on the other hand,
requires money up front. If you purchase a program and later find
that it is inadequate, you've wasted your money.
When you get software through the Shareware channel, you
typically receive a fully functional program to evaluate for a
specified length of time. At the end of the evaluation period,
you either register (pay for) it, or stop using it. Most
shareware programs offer incentives to encourage registration.
These incentives may include a printed manual, additional
software or printed materials, free telephone support, etc.
Shareware offers the supreme satisfaction guarantee. You don't
buy the program until you've tried it and are certain that it
meets your needs. If you don't use the product, you pay nothing.
Shareware is kept alive through your support. Thank you!
